Coonhunting is fun option to recruit new hunters and your kids will love it, too. Coonhunting is a great way to acquire some beautiful pelts and, from a conservation angle, temporarily get rid of nest predators. In this podcast we go on a live coon hunt in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas with Clay Newcomb and a first time hunter, Jonathan Webster. They discuss the history of coonhunting, what tree dogs are, the history of Plott hounds and the how-to of free casting hounds for coonhunting. You’ll hear the dogs strike and tree a coon and be right in the excitement. Be sure to listen until the end when their conversation turns into a play-by-play coonhunt! On this podcast we sit down with long-time Plott breeder and bear hunter, Tracy (TL) Jones of Greeneville, Tennessee to discuss some plot history, what he looks for in a bear hound, and we’ll tell some bear hunting stories. Even if you aren’t a hound hunter, this podcast is for you! Our hope is that you get a glimpse into this unique hunting niche and end up with a respect for it. Hound hunting is one of the most misunderstood types of hunting, but I think you’ll see why it’s important that you support it, even if you don’t ever care to be a part of it. Bear hunting with hounds is one of the most traditional methods of bear hunting. Many of the iconic American hunters of the past including Daniel Boone and Teddy Roosevelt were avid hound hunters. It’s anything but the lazy man’s way to hunt, and would rival any of the hunting styles on the planet in terms of difficulty and skills needed to consistently take ga

On this episode of the Bear Hunting Magazine podcast, Moe Shepherd and Clay Newcomb discuss hunting black bear on public land in the Eastern Deciduous forest without the use of bait or hounds. You might call it spot and stalk, but really it’s doing whatever it takes to take a bear which might involve treestand hunting, still hunting, hunting off the ground in a stationary position or spotting a bear and stalking it. We talk about how to find bears, where to find them, what they’re eating, what kind of sign to look for and the mentality you’ll need to be successful. We also tell some fun stories of successful hunts. This is certainly one of the most difficult hunts in North America, yes, you read that right – we gladly invite the most elite of Western hunters to the East and give them a week to kill a bear! It isn’t easy! Bears are low density animals, and when you combine that with low visibility you end up with a challenging hunt, but that’s what makes it so satisfying when success finds you.
