Today, Finance Minister Michael McGrath will present to MEPs in Brussels, advocating for Ireland as the ideal host for the EU's new anti-money laundering agency. Facing competition from major players like Germany and France, McGrath must overcome Ireland's reputation as a "Tax Haven." Stephen Rae, publisher of Anti-Money Laundering Intelligence, joins Joe Lynam from Brussels to assess Ireland's chances and discuss the presentations.

Starting tomorrow, Irish and EU exporters to the UK must pre-notify British customs, often requiring veterinary clearance. This change follows three years after the UK's exit from the single market and five years post-EU departure. Exporters face added burdens, including increased costs due to Red Sea attacks disrupting Suez Canal traffic. Simon McKeever, CEO of the Irish Exporters Association, joins Joe to discuss these developments.

A fortnight ago, a report found that Brexit had cost London and Britain badly. In fact the British capital is £30bn or 7.5% smaller than it otherwise would be in a parallel universe in which Britain had not quit the EU. But the Lord Mayor of the City of London where most of the major banks are based says it continues to thrive despite the erection of trade barriers with the Single market. Michael Mainelli is the Lord Mayor of the City of London, where the main big banks are. He’s over in Dublin this week meeting the Taoiseach and business leaders and spoke to Joe on the show.

Ireland is one of the main hubs for aircraft leasing. Thanks to the hard work of Tony Ryan and GPA in the 1980s. After a very rough 2022 for the sector, when Moscow seized so many planes legally owned here in Ireland, is the aviation industry bouncing back? And if it is, how will it deal from the fallout of Boeing 737 Max nines and panels falling out mid flight ? Jim Morrison the Chief Risk Officer with Avolon aviation discuss this with Joe this morning.

She may be one of the most important central bankers in the world but she’s not that popular with thousands of staffers within the European Central Bank.  A poll of them found the majority felt that Christine Lagarde wasn't doing a great job.  But as inflation comes tumbling down after reaching double digits in the eurozone just over a year ago, is she really failing when it comes to monetary policy. Speaking to Joe was Lars Christense from the University of Copenhagen.

Irish banks tighten credit standards as demand for business loans increase.  Irish firms are continuing to look for loans, bucking a trend seen in the wider eurozone.  Jonathan discusses this with Alan McQuaid, Economist. 

Ireland's professional jobs market is showing signs of stabilising following an overall total decline of 18% in openings through 2023. Speaking to Jonathan this morning was Tracy Keevans, Global FDI Director, Morgan McKinley Ireland.

Many of us dream of a day when we can travel a lot and do a bit of work wherever we and our laptops find ourselves.  My next guest calls himself and his company Nomad Capitalist.  He says his job is to help others slash their tax bill and live wherever they want.  His name is Andrew Henderson and now he’s moving to Ireland so less and spoke to Jonathan this morning.

Even a cursory glance at the papers at the weekend would have shown you that many small companies especially in the hospitality sector are either struggling financially or simply going to the wall.  SMEs really are also struggling with additional costs of employment including higher minimum wages and holiday or sickness pay.  But some simply don't have the money to repay the Revenue all their warehoused debt from the pandemic. Last year was a bumper year for Irish cinemas. ‘Barbenheimer’ was the phenomenon of the summer that drove thousands of people to the silver screen. But the long-term trend for cinema-going in Ireland is not great.
