Accountability is yet another church term that has become extremely vague and distorted over the years. We often have an idea of what it means, but can rarely define it. This lack of clarity has caused us to confuse accountability with codependency. Our vision of accountability can leave us walking on eggshells around one another. Accountability is not about sin prevention, executing orders or meeting expectations. Neither is it about tearing someone down or criticizing people in the midst of their struggle. When we hold each other accountable, we are giving the other person the responsibility to own their story. It is taking another individual seriously that they desire change and are willing to work for it. Holding each other accountable values the relationship. It provides a sense of encouragement and grace. A clear path results in accountability and it is authenticity that creates the clear path. Only when we are authentic can we be truly known.
