WCW: The Legacy Series - Bash at the Beach '00

This week, the boys are here to discuss a very interesting topic: the future of WWE. They begin by setting the context of how hard wrestling is to predict by going back to 2011 and 12 and looking at how much has changed since then, before breaking down some of the current issues in the product and how they might develop over the next five years or so. They'll look at the part timer issue, whether we will go back to two hour Raws sooner rather than later, whether the brand split will end by Wrestlemania XXXIX, the future of the WWE Network, the continued development of the women's division, and much much more. This week, The Doc is actually feeling pretty optimistic about the Smackdown brand; not its weekly TV show, mind you (that's still a creative dumpster fire), but about its upcoming Fast Lane pay-per-view.  Low and behold, the card for Sunday is looking alright on paper; Doc previews a show that filled out much better beyond its cluster main-event than one had any right to expect.  Also, he discusses the role that the McMahon family plays on television in the modern era and reveals the February awards for male and female Wrestler of the Month (January's winners were Nakamura and Asuka) and Match of the Month (January winner was Almas vs. Gargano at Takeover).

In this special edition of the podcast, The Doc reflects back on the origins of WrestleMania and how it quickly evolved beyond its achievements in 1985 while maintaining through its first several years the aura that helped it earn its moniker of "The Super Bowl of professional wrestling."  Doc discusses the unprecedented creative hot streak that helped build the 'Mania franchise around Hulk Hogan and others, and how the end of that streak combined with changing times and various circumstances altered the successful format established in the 1980s by necessity.  He then looks at what 'Mania became in the New Generation and later the Attitude Era, during the tail end of which they stumbled upon the presentational formula still used today to great financial and critical success (at times).  The bottom line: if you think you'd enjoy a conversation about WrestleMania lore, this is the podcast for you..

This week, The Doc is trying to decide how excited he should be for Raw's exclusive Elimination Chamber event this Sunday.  Most presume it will do little more than confirm a WrestleMania main-event that about 5% of our LOP listener base has expressed real interest in seeing, but what if that is not the case?  Doc explores the various possibilities and shares one particular thing that he would like to see from the men's Elimination Chamber in particular regardless of whether Roman Reigns wins or not.  He also is a bit more intrigued by Nia Jax vs. Asuka than others, and is curious to see how the women respond to an opportunity like the Chamber that is not quite as ripe for their success as was the Royal Rumble.
