The Prestige (2006)
08/09/2023 Duración: 34minThe Second Part of our Building a Better Monster Trilogy We are back to talking Christopher Nolan joints (but still no TENET) in a dueling banjos of dorks between Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as magicians with a grudge. And vengeance! Plenty of vengeance unlike that DiCaprio bear movie! Because this movie is fun. Perhaps the most fun we've had with one of Mr. Nolan's work though we do have some problems with what happens to Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson and yes, especially Ms. Coyote Ugly. Enjoy! The Village (2004)
01/09/2023 Duración: 26minThe First Part in our Building a Better Monster Trilogy We welcome M. Night Shyamalan's work to the TiT club with the film where it all started to go wrong for "The Next Spielberg." But you know what (show notes author's note here that nothing subtle ever followed a sentence that starts with YOU KNOW WHAT) we actually like this movie. Just go ahead and put one giant SPOILER ALERT for this episode as we discuss the dashed hopes of Ain't It Cool News posters and the parenting skills of William Hurt. But it's lovely, the romance is lovely, the cinematography is lovely and Adrien Brody is... well, it's better than THE LADY IN THE WATER! Which we promise is not coming to the podcast soon. But it will at some later date. Enjoy the love story in LARPing! We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! Patreon Preview of Cinema Speculation: SISTERS
30/08/2023 Duración: 09minIf you have a buck instead of a book... we read so you don't have to. We try not to be a peeping tom like the hero in SISTERS (though at heart that's all we are) by throwing in a couple of extra chapters from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION. One on secondary cinema's greatest fan in Los Angeles Times film critic Kevin Thomas. Along the way one host berates the other for his terrible social media branding which is one of the many reasons (but is the MAIN one) on why neither of us will ever become Kevin Thomas. AND THEN we get to the pervy stuff of Brian De Palma! Enjoy and keep reading along with us from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! Follow along at our Patreon page as once a month (although sometimes more) we read AND watch the following films: Bullitt Dirty Harry Deliverance The Getaway The Outfit Sisters Daisy Miller Taxi Driver Rolling Thunder Paradise Alley Escape From Alcatraz Hardcore The Funhouse Threads/Twitter/Instagram/Facebook: @trilogyintheory Letterboxd: @projectingfil

Bride of Chucky (1998)
24/08/2023 Duración: 39minThe Third Part in our Dolls in Different Worlds Trilogy What began with Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie reinventing BARBIE for the modern age ends with Jennifer Tilly domesticating a tiny ginger-haired twerp. One host sees this as a seminal work in his moviegoing journey and the other feels like his film travels must have ended in failure to get to this point. The point is that we have arrived at the much threatened BRIDE OF CHUCKY episode and our only hope is Katherine Heigl. When is it not? Enjoy! Coraline (2009)
16/08/2023 Duración: 26minThe Second Part in our Dolls in Different Worlds Trilogy One host introduces his child to horror and the other is horrified to pay Fathom Event pricing for the re-release of CORALINE. However that's about the only thing we find scary in our lovefest for Henry Selick and Neil Gaiman's film about a girl who dares to like a bit of rain and a good supper BUT that doesn't mean she wants buttons for eyes! A simple request really. Enjoy the episode dear listeners and if you have the simple request of one host breaking gout his 3D television for a proper rewatch of CORALINE we'd be happy to accommodate. But we aren't made of Fathom money here. We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! Barbie (2023)
09/08/2023 Duración: 29minThe First Part in our Dolls in Different Worlds Trilogy The second part of Barbenheimer is the first part of our trilogy playing with dolls at the movies. And before you accuse us of being creepy... EVERYONE IS DOING IT as Greta Gerwig's BARBIE will go on to reign as The Savior of Cinema (sorry, Tom Cruise.) And while we may just be a couple of Michael Ceras standing on the sidelines watching the incredible charisma of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling do their thing we can still hope that some of that wild success rubs off on this little movie podcast. But probably not. By part three we will have devolved to our natural state of BRIDE OF CHUCKY. Enjoy! We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! Oppenheimer (2023)
04/08/2023 Duración: 33minThe Third Part in our Circles of Power Trilogy What more can be said about OPPENHEIMER? Did we see it in IMAX? 70mm? No and no. Emily Blunt? She's pretty good. Matt Damon? Better role than INTERSTELLER! Florence Pugh is naked? Tastefully done! So once we handle those easy questions we wrap up our trilogy on objects of terrible power by doing what J.R.R. Tolkien could not. Tackle nuclear energy! Only as TiT can. We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
19/07/2023 Duración: 31minThe Second Part in our Circles of Power Trilogy In which one host questions why the other needs more books when he's already seen the picture show. This is but the first of insults to the fans of Middle-earth in a podcast hoping that some of those very fans give this a click or two. We apologize by attacking the attempted allegorical nature of the power of the ring as nuclear power... which we then immediately backtrack on by featuring OPPENHEIMER next week as the finale of our Trilogy in Theory! Stay tuned! We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! Sphere (1998)
11/07/2023 Duración: 27minThe First Part in our Circles of Power Trilogy After 130 episodes we finally answer the burning question this little movie podcast has been building to: What happens when Jerry gets mad? And what happens when Samuel L. Jackson is really into a good book? And more importantly is Dustin Hoffman not a big believer in an honest LinkedIn profile? All of this and one host admits to rewatching the Barry Levinson adaption of Michael Crichton's SPHERE even after editing this very episode. Being a fan of this movie and this podcast is a good start to our trilogy on terrifying power. Enjoy! We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! The Flash (2023)
07/07/2023 Duración: 37minThe Third Part in our Time Traveling with Dads Trilogy Given the box-office reception to THE FLASH perhaps it's appropriate that your hosts found a theme of failure to be the most fulfilling thing about this latest superhero comic book adaptation and we hope the legacy here is that it signals an end. A sweet merciful end to the capes and funny books. But until then we try to find the good in a genre of movies that gets far too much coverage. And if you feel the same maybe you could time travel back to our previous two parts of this month's trilogy and give another download to BACK TO THE FUTURE and INTERSTELLAR. Whichever decision you make... enjoy! We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! Interstellar (2014)
28/06/2023 Duración: 36minThe Second Part in our Time Traveling with Dads Trilogy We apologize (though not with much enthusiasm) to director Christopher Nolan for not being in the appropriate tax bracket to appreciate his appropriately entertaining INTERSTELLAR on our far from appropriate home theater setup. HOWEVER! One host credits this film for distracting him of the ills of four years of American politics... so that's pretty good, right? It's more than TENET accomplished anyways. Enjoy the podcast of more crying dads and some science mumbo jumbo dialogue! We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! Back to the Future (1985)
25/06/2023 Duración: 28minThe First Part in our Time Traveling with Dads Trilogy In what is perhaps the most dour episode on the all-time classic film BACK TO THE FUTURE we go over the appropriation of black culture, nostalgia for a past that didn't really exist and aging with jowls. But we love this Robert Zemeckis film! LOVE IT. We just hate ourselves apparently. And our listeners. Please rate, review and subscribe and we promise to be a bit lighter on the second part of our trilogy for... INTERSTELLAR. Maybe we'll switch it to THE DARK KNIGHT. Stay subscribed and see for yourself! We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
20/06/2023 Duración: 32minThe Third Part in our On the Road with Ladies of Vengeance trilogy. You can't go wrong with Charlize Theron driving your movie. Unfortunately the prequel to MAD MAX: FURY ROAD does not take the above advice and while we wouldn't dare to advise the great George Miller on his filmmaking sequel choices (BABE: PIG IN THE CITY good and HAPPY FEET TWO not so much) we do hope that Nicholas Hoult can convey his great performance as a likable bald villain into playing Lex Luthor. And there's your one reference to comic book movies that ALL pale in comparison to an action movie that will referenced and spoke of with great reverence decades from now. And now I will retire from writing these show notes to go watch SWEET NOVEMBER or THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. Because I remember Charlize. And not much else. Good day! Patreon Preview of Cinema Speculation: THE OUTFIT
15/06/2023 Duración: 05minIn which one man thinks he may have a PAYBACK: Director's Cut DVD on a shelf somewhere... Quentin Tarantino uses this chapter of CINEMA SPECULATION to settle some scores with an overzealous hack of a film critic from the 70s, the entire cinematic output of the 80s and lastly with a glancing blow to Mel Gibson in the 90s. The last one is relevant to the screen adaptations of Richard Stark's Parker character who here is played by Robert Duvall. We use this as opportunity to make bald jokes and we think QT would be proud. Enjoy and keep reading along with us from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! Death Proof (2007)
12/06/2023 Duración: 33minOn the road with a backtracking Quentin Tarantino... ...for he apologized for his half of the failed GRINDHOUSE double feature BUT WE DON'T. After suffering through an hour of PLANET TERROR we loved nothing more than taking a ride with Zoë Bell (as The Great Zoë Bell, of course) and the second group of our vengeful ladies. This time their eyes are set on the villainous Stuntman Mike as played by Kurt Russell but we look more to acclaimed filmmakers dealing with failure and how that quest for a perfect filmography limits the conversation on experimentation. Is this episode our DEATH PROOF? We certainly hope so. Enjoy and keep reading along with us from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! Patreon Preview of Cinema Speculation: THE GETAWAY
08/06/2023 Duración: 06minA dumpster truck filled with love. We're a little late... but Steve McQueen is a forgiving man in Sam Peckinpah's THE GETAWAY. As long as the one being forgiven is Ali MacGraw. And even then it will take the runtime of a feature film and numerous escapes from the law, criminals and dumpster trucks before that grouch gives an inch. We expect more from our listeners even if they expect less and less from us. Welcome to the Movie Book Club once again! Enjoy and keep reading along with us from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! Thelma & Louise (1991)
11/05/2023 Duración: 32minTo tell the story of female empowerment we must turn to Sir Ridley Scott... ...and of course the talents of Susan Sarandon, TRILOGY IN THEORY favorite Geena Davis and most importantly screenwriter Callie Khouri. And while one host fails miserably at his attempt at a mini book club by starting (but not finishing) OFF THE CLIFF by Becky Aikman... he did agree with the anecdote of not cheering on the screen death of the wonderfully tall Brigitte Nielsen in BEVERLY HILLS COP 2. That's neither here nor there but support women! And we intend to do so this month as we hit the road with leading ladies of action and leave Shooter McGavin behind! Patreon Preview of Cinema Speculation: DELIVERANCE
04/05/2023 Duración: 06minFloating along the river with QT and Lara Croft's father... In the spirit of Richard Linklater (our most popular filmmaker on the podcast) we present a hang movie. Just boys being boys. Except for Burt Reynolds who is, as always, the manliest man in a vest. Which leads into our episode primarily on masculinity. Something you can take to the bank coming from two movie podcasters, a creative field dominated by the burliest of men. Or something like that. Enjoy and keep reading along with us from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! Air (2023)
20/04/2023 Duración: 35minMeet a man who manages to hate both Michael Jordan and Toni Collette... ...and please (PLEASE) stick around for the other host who respects and admires both while also showing some love to the auteur Mr. Ben Affleck. This means it's time for another new release! Though it may be a throwback to popcorn dramas aimed at adults (and not children's movies marketed towards adults who won't grow up) we still must cope with the nostalgia factor that is anything set in the 80s or 90s. No matter as Viola Davis comes in to close it out with a speech on the great American tradition of wage theft. More fun than ANT-MAN 3 these show notes can assure you! Notting Hill (1999)
14/04/2023 Duración: 33minWe begun our discussion on a modern romcom classic by reading erotica. As one does when discussing NOTTING HILL. It's lovely. And mostly gross. The erotica! Not Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant falling for each other across tax brackets in a Richard Curtis script. One host is late to the game and the other never really left his rewatch of Flopsy & the Movie Star. Nor does he ever want to. In fact this is approximately his eighteenth podcast on the very subject. No apologies! Except for the erotica talk.
