Well. Here we are. We woke up this morning in the Year of Our Lord 2,025. Did you think we would make it? It's a little surprising to me, I have to say. But God isn't surprised. Not fallowing is not following. Judah was taken into exile because of its idolatry, which doesn't surprise us. But there's another reason that God expelled the nation: they refused to follow His instructions for a 7-year sabbath of the farmland. There was more at issue than just nutrient replenishment of the soil. It was a question of who really owns that patch of earth, and whether He can be trusted to provide. "For I know the plans that I have for you...." One of the most comforting promises in the Bible is found in Jeremiah 29: "'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.'" We know the verse, but do we know the context? It's right in the middle of Jeremiah's prophecy of a 70-year exile. Daniel was moved less by the general words of encouragement, and more by the math. God was moving the chess pieces around, to get the King into position! It wasn't just entire human populations that were being shifted; the planetarium had been reprogrammed, as well! "It's all a big accident," they tell us. From you to the universe, it's all just random chance. No plan, no direction, no purpose. They tell us. "Keep Christ in Christmas!" It makes a good bumper sticker. Bumper stickers, wall hangings and slogans aren't long enough to let us fully explain an idea. At best they're provokers of thought. A new administration brought a flurry of activity - in heaven! If Daniel were here now, he'd be praying. It's easy to answer "What would Daniel do?" because the guy prays about everything! He finds a prophecy related to current events? He prays. The satraps set a trap! In Daniel, chapter 6, we "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." There was a different king on the throne, but not much would change except the language on the road signs. The bureaucracy would carry on, of course, and the Hebrew captive Daniel would still be part of it. And once again the cream would rise to the top. But, as you may have noticed, people of mediocre ability don't appreciate those with an "excellent spirit." Belshazzar and Belteshazzar: the names were similar, but the men could not have been more different. At the party described in Daniel 5, we see the king, Belshazzar: proud, arrogant, blasphemous - and scared out of his mind. He's looking at Belteshazzar (Daniel): humble, reverent, confident. The king's gods of metal and stone and wood didn't write the message he'd just received. He knew that. And he knew the message was for him. If you destroy a culture, you erase a people. We would say that the Jews have survived for thousands of years because of God's blessing - including the blessings of Scripture and a cohesive culture. Anyone who attacks those unifying forces, Scripture and culture, wants to dissolve that group. Daniel and his readers were warned of one such attacker. The ram, the goat, and the angel! Do you believe the old saying that, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall?" Meet the Antichrist! If we didn't have the Revelation to John, we would still have the revelations given to Daniel, centuries earlier. We'll look at one of them today. In chapter 7 of Daniel's book we get our first glimpse of Earth's final human king - the Man of Sin, the Counterfeit Savior, the Beast. In Dan's dream he's symbolized by a horn. We see Daniel's righteousness in his preparation. We can only make sense of our lives, in many cases, when we look back. Then we see the significance of events that seemed unimportant - even random - at the time they happened.
