The storms of life bring turmoil, both internally and externally. Following Jesus doesn't mean that the storm completely disappears, but there is deep-seated assurance in His presence. Jesus not only calms the wind and waves of the external storm, creating peace, but He also creates peace inside us through salvation. We'll wrap on our sermon series on Sunday with an encouragement to pay attention to God's message. Paul will tell Timothy to be ready for anything and to be consistent as he continues to proclaim the gospel. Often we are very inconsistent with God's message and typically we only share when it's convenient or easy. God's Word will challenge us to be consistent, to be patient and to do the work that God has given us. In the third week of our sermon series, we'll dive into the culture that surrounds the ministry of the gospel. Paul warns Timothy that things are going to get tough in the last days. But don't worry, Paul also encourages Timothy to stay strong by following the right teaching with patience, love, and perseverance. What do you think about the culture around us? This Sunday we'll look at 2 Timothy 2, examining our response to people around us. Paul sets up two examples; one that relies on God and rightly handles the word of truth and the other that is marked by quarreling, irreverent babble and ungodliness. It's not hard to see how the second example runs rampant in our culture and easily seeps into the church. Just open any social media platform and read the comments. It's a wasteland of dissension, mean-spirited discussion and outright sin. In the midst of these challenges, God's Word gives us hope. It leads us to reject any approach that swerves from truth and enables us to pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace. It guards against false teaching and helps us to accomplish God's mission, by the power of the Spirit that works within us. For the month of January the new sermon series will look exclusively at missions and ministry, both locally and around the world. Each year, our church takes up a special Christmas offering that supports those who have given their lives towards the advancement of the gospel. We'll be studying the letter of 2 Timothy and encouraging the church to be "Mission Ready" as we support and encourage those who have been sent out to do gospel work all around the world. To wrap up our time in Luke 1-2 we'll look at the final piece to the Christmas symphony, the long-awaited birth. Jesus enters the stage and in doing so, hundreds and hundreds of prophecies in the Old Testament are fulfilled. The waiting is over as Jesus comes and rescues us from our sin!
