Nevada Youth Empowerment Project gives homeless young women (18-24) in the Reno area a chance to reroute their lives through a structured program that provides housing and basic needs, life skills training, opportunities to practice new life skills, and the support and love of a family. The David J. Drakulich Foundation for Freedom of Expression aka DJD Foundation offers art and recreation programs that help establish connections thereby improving the quality of life for those valiant community members. David Drakulich was a young artist who turned soldier serving as an Airborne Ranger with the 82nd Airborne Division. He lost his life on January 9, 2008 in Afghanistan in the Global War on Terror. People end up being homeless due to circumstances that went out of their control. There’s a wrong perception that homelessness is a choice and these people would rather stay on the streets than find a job. However, the best service one can provide to homeless people is providing them with the resources to secure a job so they can sustain a household. Employment can play an important role in recovery. People with histories of homelessness, including those with disabilities, often want to work given the opportunity and support to do so. When people who previously experienced homelessness are placed in housing, many develop feelings of isolation. Employment not only provides income, but offers a structured activity with a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
