People want Jesus to feed them - until they find out what He's serving. Yesterday we read from John chapter 6, about the miracle of the Feeding of the Five-Thousand. What's so miraculous about multiplication? Granted, it would be miracle if some of us could actually do multiplication - without a calculator, at least. A well, and a pool. Today our study of the Person of Jesus takes us to John 4 and the land of Samaria. There we'll find a famous well, and an infamous woman. It was hard to hear the prophets over the escaping profits! Jesus came to the Temple in a particular manner that should have "rung a bell" or "struck a chord" in the minds of everyone there. "The Lord whom you seek shall suddenly come to His temple," Malachi had written. "He shall purify the sons of Levi." But while that prophecy was being fulfilled in real time, people were distracted. "What's Your sign?" The Jewish leaders asked Jesus the same question that we ask Him - and the whole world asks Him: "What sign do You show to us?" Signs reassure us! When you're driving in an unfamiliar place - and I think this applies whether you're using the GPS or the "dead reckoning" method of navigation - there's a sigh of relief when you see the road sign you're looking for. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet...." The psalmist gave us a mental picture of a lamp. Kids, that's like a flashlight that ran on olive oil! In biblical times it was something everyone owned, understood, and used every evening. Did Jesus pick up that symbol of the lamp representing divine revelation when He gave us the Parable of the Ten Virgins? If so, that gives us a clue to interpreting the story. Have we been misreading one of the parables? Jesus' story about the Wise and Foolish Virgins - or the Ten Bridesmaids - may not be about what we think it's about. The view from the ark isn't pretty. In Noah's day people were getting engaged, taking on mortgages, making retirement plans - when God suddenly ended everything.
