  • SHARKS w/ Dr. Charlie Huveneers

    03/10/2020 Duración: 48min

I think my excitement got in my way a little bit this conversation! I was frothing so hard on the opportunity to talk to this bloke, but also uncomfortably aware of how time-critical his schedule was, and how talking to a completely uneducated armchair scientist like me ranked very, very, very low as a priority. Dr Charlie Huveneers is a professor at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia, and as much of an authority on sharks as they come. I reckon I could have talked to him for hours on end, but we only had 45 minutes and I wanted to pick his brains about the most controversial aspects of the great white shark debate that’s currently ravaging ocean communities. My endless thanks again to Dr. Huveneers for being so generous with his time when he could have easily just told me to bugger off! This was such a privilege. Hope you enjoy it friends, rols xox

  • UPDATE: SELF TORQUE

    23/09/2020 Duración: 12min

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND we're back. Sorry for the long intermission. I've been doing some stuff! Mainly goose-stepping through 2020 like everyone else, but also resolving myself towards a new understanding of the relationship between environmentalism and mental health. You'll notice this has given way to a new title, a new theme, a whole new beginning. It's still me, Rols - the luckiest human on the planet - but I'm gonna start running at this podcast in a new way. I hope you'll come for the ride, which is gonna be in my trusty 4x4 firetruck, powered by waste vegetable oil, around Australia from conversation to conversation about the sustainability of human evolution. SELF TORQUE! I'm excited a f.

This is a #sunkenplace recording from last week with my pal/wise uncle @antoineaustin. Sure, we talked a little bit about colonAvirus, but mainly we DIDN’T talk about coronalvirus, because how fkn boring is that to hear/see/read all the bloody time!! Instead, we sat down and talked supreme shit about gaming addictions. Every face-to-face conversation feels that much more meaningful these days, and this one was no exception. Talking is fun. #thesunkenplace #podcast #straya

  • TSP46 - Anthony Austin

    12/04/2020 Duración: 46min

Had a responsible and socially-distanced chinwag with my mate Fob the other day. No prizes for guessing where we podcasted from - that’s right, the sunken place, the bottom of the bloody ocean of madness that is the Coronavirus-ridden world of 2020. Enjoy our uneducated and impassioned analysis of pandemic-life! #thesunkenplace #fobandrols

The other day me good m8 Sam and I cracked a few cold tins down at the beach and shot the breeze, mainly idiosyncrasies about making coffee and 4x4s. Fun yarning and good quarantine listening!

  • go96 - Leah Ramage

    15/03/2020 Duración: 01h58min

Leah and I have been mates for a good while now. She is the weapon behind @leahsmark_illustration and a gangster eco ninja. This podcast has been a long time coming!!! We talked about, well, pretty much all the things. I got very very close to being swung at by a stranger recently for stepping between him and a woman he was abusing, we talked about that. Surf rage, gender, being “busy”, climate change, the pill... it was such a fun ramble! We didn’t plan it, but a big part of what made this recording special was talking about mental health. Being diagnosed with depression was probably the most catalytic experience of my life. It forced me to take responsibility for my happiness - to acknowledge how much of my quality of life is a choice - and it was cathartic to share moments of rock bottom (as it always it, right?!). Very grateful for this chat, thanks for the time and space lady. www.emuparade.org https://www.leahsmark.com.au/

  • TSP45 - Anthony Austin

    28/02/2020 Duración: 49min

I got fined over the New Year’s holiday period for making people free coffee in exchange for rubbish they picked up at my favourite local beach. It sucks! Particularly as I’m less than two months out from leaving on the biggest one man cleanup expedition in Australian history. I’ll be circumnavigating the coasts throughout 2020 to pick up as much rubbish as I can... goes without saying that hopefully this doesn’t keep happening. But who better to yarn to about it to than my INeedYouMan confidant @antoineaustin as we enjoyed some fresh air in his front yard. Impossible not to feel good hanging out with this bloke. Thanks for listening!!! xox #thesunkenplace

“No one cares.” Is that a good thing or a bad thing to you? I feel like the tonal ambiguity of those three words are an appropriate symbol for the simply infinite complexity of mental health. • TRE.08 - Harriet Spark

    15/11/2019 Duración: 01h08min

*** AS SEEN ON THE RIPPLE EFFECT *** "Harriet might be the most true blue, fair dinkum Aussie environmentalist that you will ever listen to." Harriet’s love for nature took her into the ocean as a diver. When she saw the amount of plastic straws washing up in Manly Cove, she realised the need to educate more people about conservation and inspire the same love she has for nature in others. And so STRAWkling was born, a "many hands make light work" inspired movement that combines environmentalism, communication and snorkelling. This is the last conversation in Season One of The Ripple Effect. Please help us spread these conversations far and wide by giving us five stars, hitting 'subscribe' and sharing with your mates on social media or in "real life"! www.luckyroland.com.au

  • go92 - Pete Rowed

    01/11/2019 Duración: 01h16min

Aren’t vehicles basically time traveling devices? Like, by getting from A to B in some fraction of the time it should have taken you with legs - potentially with a tonne of cargo - you are effectively gifting yourself with hours, days or even YEARS that you weren’t biologically intended to have at your disposal? To then do whatever it is you now want to do instead? Anyway look that’s only the first minute or so of this podcast. My friend Pete legit makes me feel like my brain is a honda civic next to his porsche 911. The way this man’s energy rumbles is always such a treat to behold so hopefully you enjoy this chat in the park that we had the other day. PS. Pete also makes one of the most functionally perfect products I’ve ever used - @repe for easy separation and carriage of waste in the wilderness. My cleanups don’t happen without them! • TRE.05 - Madison Page

    15/10/2019 Duración: 01h22min

This chat with Madii was a blast. We moseyed down to Clifton Gardens for a chat about a plethora of topics, from marine biology, to climate change, to food psychology, to movies, to indigenous culture... the main takeaway I’m left with (still) is trying to reconcile what I was doing when I was 21, because it definitely wasn’t starting up a non-profit conservation organisation. • TRE.04 - Kirilly Lowcock

    22/09/2019 Duración: 01h14min

Straight up - this chat with Kirilly from earlier this year about her organisation Indigenous Doulas was one of the most impactful conversations I’ve ever had. As a white bloke in Australia, I know that I’ve got the easiest go of it out of everyone on the entire planet. I don’t know what it’s like to suffer discrimination based on my gender or race, so talking to Kirilly - a fiercely driven Indigenous Australian woman - about childbirth and racism was quite frankly an intimidating prospect. But as politically loaded as these subjects can be, I reckon there‘s only one way to bridge gaps in understanding between socially disparate groups, and it’s by talking! Honestly and respectfully, with no agenda but to learn. Luckily for me, Kirilly was patient, eloquent and passionate, and it didn’t take me long to realise that I was communicating with a soul who has been around the traps for a hell of a lot longer than most. I still feel really privileged for the opportunity to have had this discussion on the banks o

Fob and I parked up on a secret harbour beach with stunning views of Sydney for a long overdue catch-up. From long-distance dating to behavioural psychology surrounding garbage, we covered a LOT this chat!!! Bloody hell I love this bloke. www.luckyroland.com.au
