Aren’t ambiguous words like “cool” and “weird” kind of unhelpful in their ubiquity? Especially in terms of the power words can have on how depressed or anxious we feel? This was a pretty big way to round out the year for me; easily one of the most meaningful conversations I’ve ever had (let alone recorded). Nico Kypreos made me - barista of 11 years, espresso bar owner of 5 - feel like my love for coffee is in fact only a vague interest. This bloke full tilt lives and breathes it. And the most beautiful thing about Nico’s obsession with coffee is what I observed to be his use of it as a vehicle to change his world for the better. Talking about the unresolved genocide of Australia’s First Nations is fraught with social peril, not least for a white bloke of insane privilege like me. But I definitely don’t think that’s a valid reason not to discuss it! Truth is, this episode is big.
