Philadelphia Area College Football Preview: Temple University Owls Head Coach Rod Carey          The Temple Owls were the only area college football team to play in the fall in 2020. It didn’t go real well. COVID-19 and injuries played havoc with the schedule and the roster and Temple struggled to a 1-6 record. But the Owls and head coach Rod Carey are looking to turn things around here in 2021 and make some noise in the American Athletic Conference. Temple will open its 2021 season on Thursday September 2nd with a non-conference road game against Rutgers.      

Philadelphia Area College Football Preview: Delaware Valley University Aggies Head Coach Duke Greco The Delaware Valley University Aggies had their 2020 season cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic, but they will look to pick up where they left off two years ago when they get back on the field this fall. DelVal is one of the elite programs in Division III. In 2019, the Aggies went 11-2, winning the Middle Atlantic Conference for a third straight year and then DelVal advanced to the National Quarterfinals of the D3 playoffs. Head coach Duke Greco is in his 8th season at the helm in Doylestown, where he has compiled an incredible win/loss record of 59-11. The Aggies will open their 2021 season on Friday, September 3rd on the road against Kean University.

The University of Delaware Blue Hens are coming off an impressive 7-1 campaign that saw them advance all the way to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs and hopes are high for more of that kind of success this fall. Head Coach Danny Rocco says his team's biggest strengths are depth and experience, and they're ready to play football games in the fall after last year's season was postponed to this past spring because of COVID-19. Delaware will open the season on Thursday night, September 2nd on the road with a Colonial Athletic Association game against Maine.    

Sparky Lyle was one of the greatest relief pitchers in baseball history. In 16 years in the big leagues, the 1977 American League Cy Young Award winner made 899 appearances, all out of the bullpen, saved 238 games and had a career ERA of 2.88. He spent parts of three seasons with the Phillies, including 1980 when they won the World Series. After his playing days, he spent 15 years as the manager of the Somerset Patriots, then of the independent Atlantic League. Philadelphia Area College Football Preview: Widener University Pride Head Coach Mike Barainyak  The Widener University football team is preparing for the 2021 season and looking to make some noise in the Middle Atlantic Conference. The Division III Pride lost their 2020 season to the COVID19 pandemic, so head coach Mike Barainyak has a group of players that are anxious to get back out on the field. Widener is scheduled to open its 2021 season on Saturday, September 4th in Glassboro against Rowan University.  

Philadelphia Area College Football Preview: Lincoln University Lions Head Coach Justin Dean After losing the 2020 season to the COVID19 pandemic, the Division II Lincoln University Lions are anxious to get the 2021 college football season underway. Josh Dean has been the head coach at Lincoln since 2018. Lincoln is slated to open its 2021 season on Saturday, September 4th with a home game against Lock Haven.  

Mike McDonald has been the head girls basketball coach at Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster since 2015. On his watch, the Vikings have been an elite program, winning three state titles and two Philadelphia Catholic League crowns. Wood alums are found on college rosters throughout the Philadelphia area and beyond. Kevin Quinn spent 49 years coaching track & field and cross country at Saint Joseph’s University. Trish Juhline Brunner was one of the greatest players in the history of Villanova University women’s basketball. A Cardinal O’Hara product, she scored more than 1,600 points during her career and as a senior in 2003, she helped lead the Wildcats to the Big East Tournament Title and the NCAA Tournament’s Elite 8. Kevin McGovern is a baseball player. He's a left-handed pitcher and a Philly guy, he went to high school at Archbishop Ryan and college at Thomas Jefferson University in East Falls. And for the last decade he has been moving all over the country and beyond, playing ball in independent minor leagues, with teams not affiliated with any Major League squad. That is a long time to be chasing your dream. But things changed earlier this month for the 32-year-old McGovern, when he was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He's spent the last couple weeks with their Double A team in Springfield, Missouri, the Springfield Cardinals. Before the NBA G League, there was the Eastern Professional Basketball League. It was a northeast league stocked to the brim with great players like John Chaney, Stan Pawlak, Jim Boeheim, and Hal Lear, with many of the teams calling Eastern Pennsylvania home.
